Black Lava Field Visitor Centre Design
Architecture, Interior Design and Brand Experience
CONCEPT
Located between Lake Mývatn and Hverfjall volcano within Iceland’s Black Lava Fields, this visitor centre is designed as a sensitive response to its dramatic natural setting. The architecture uses contextually appropriate materials and a low-impact form to integrate seamlessly with the surrounding lava landscape and birch woodland.
Framed views connect visitors to the terrain year-round, while sheltered vantage points provide an ideal setting for viewing the northern lights. The project enhances the experience of the landscape through site-specific, environmentally responsive design.
“A central staircase leads to the viewing platform, creating the sensation of emerging through an opening in the surrounding rock.”
“The interior design is simple and functional, with a nature-inspired palette that combines organic textures and refined, reflective materials to create contrast throughout the space.”
