CONCEPT

Born from the plant to plate concept the Vogafjos greenhouse restaurant is an immersive dining and education experience that allows visitors to not only experience high quality food but also understand the growing process.

To create an environment that allows visitors to feel connected to the produce, the greenhouses have been located at the heart of the development centrered between the two timber structures that make up the restaurant and the multipurpose hall. This is so that the produce and the work that goes into growing and maintaining the fruit and vegetables can always be seen.

To maximise visibility a simple steel framework and ETFE panels are used to construct the greenhouses. This is a contrast to the architecture of the restaurant and creates visual impact and a feeling that the lush greenery of the plants is bursting out of the ground and through the two sections of the main building.

The materiality of the timber structure is to reflect the environment and the tones of the lava fields and should be locally sourced to reduce the carbon footprint of the project.

Charred timber is mixed with natural poplar and blackened steel whilst, sandstone, brick and concrete have been used within the interior to give the space warm and nautral tones.
